It should be a given that Mary is the model mother where we learn and see what perfect motherhood looks like. Our Blessed Mother remained pure and chaste, always acquiesced to the will of God the Father, raised the Son of God and taught him how to be a good person (Jesus was fully human and had to learn like the rest of us), and she even suffered by watching her only Son die on the Cross. Mary experienced everything (except sin) that all mothers experience from the best to the worse of cases. This is what makes Mary the model mother.
To be honest, Mary even experienced failure as a mother. I’m sure it happened more than just once; but, she did lose the child Jesus for three days. Many parents know the feeling of when they think, even for a second, that their child is missing. Mary and Joseph felt that for three days! So, just because she is perfect, in that she never sinned, doesn’t mean she didn’t make mistakes. Sometime we let the whole Immaculate Conception thing get in the way of seeing Mary as another woman and mother we can relate to. She was 100% human as you and I are 100% human. We can relate to her and we should.
As we continue our Mothers Day celebrations and this month of May dedicated to Mary, lets focus on turning to our Blessed Mother as an advocate, intercessor, and friend that we can call upon for help. Let’s look to Mary as a model for mothers, daughters, and as another mother we can turn to for help. My prayer to Mary is very similar to how I talk with my own mother. This is how many of the Saints related to Mary, especially St. Pope John Paul II. Mary is our mother and she wants us to turn to her for prayer, support, and love.
